Hello everyone, welcome to our Autumn Newsletter. I hope that you are all well and staying safe.

Hello my name is Alan I am Chairman of our lovely Scarboccia group. I am registered blind and I have a guide dog called Oscar with a wife of 20 years and 4 grown up boys aged between 16-23. I am a qualified coach in sport and I used to teach P.E. at St Martin’s school in Scarborough. I am taking qualifications in Disability Sports and I have lots of ideas not only for our group but the other group that I also Chair.

My hobbies are coaching Youth Football, which I have done for 22 years. I also like Snooker and walking with Oscar. I love meeting people and getting out, watching TV and to go out to socialise.

I hope that everyone is safe and well and I am so looking forward to meeting up with you all when we all feel it is safe to do so.

We would like to congratulate Alan on his recent Award for his services to Grassroots Football in the East Riding. Keep up the great work. We are proud to say that Alan has also been Nominated for National Disability Coach of the Year, the awards will be later in the year.

Scarboccia are pleased to announce that we are winners of the Lockdown Award, and we congratulate all the nominees, who also received an award in recognition for their work throughout the Lockdown and the Coronavirus pandemic. These awards are in association with Active Yorkshire Coast, Scarborough Sports Council and Everyone Active.

Visually Impaired Boccia (VI Boccia)

Our Governing Body Boccia England have launched a Visually Impairment Boccia Resource in partnership with British Blind Sport. We have been working with them to provide them with information on our members who have various Visual Impairments and the methods they use to play Boccia. Scarboccia are featured in the resource as a Case Study: Spotlight on Scarboccia. The Resource can be found on the following link https://www.bocciaengland.org.uk/vi-boccia pages 17 & 18. We are pleased to say that we have been accepted on to this Development Package. This will assist us in developing our delivery of VI Boccia to our members and the local community.

Linda has completed an online Introduction to Visually Impaired Boccia tutored course with Boccia England to compliment the new resource and VI Boccia development.

Toyota Update

Scarboccia have met with Vantage Toyota Scarborough as they have chosen us as their Fundraising Charity and we are in continued contact and discussions about a fundraising event – Watch this Space!

Scarboccia would like to say a huge Thank You to the Scarborough based company Sirius Minerals for their £1,000 grant this will help fund the rent of our hubs and equipment.

Also, to Arnold Clark Community Fund for their grant of £1,000 for some New Age Kurling sets for our hubs.

Well done to all GB Paralympic Athletes who went to Tokyo but particularly to the 9 Boccia UK players who were selected for Tokyo.

Congratulations to David Smith MBE on retaining his Paralympic Championship title for the second time in the BC1 Individual classification. Fantastic matches to watch, really nail-biting games and well deserved. GB won 41 Gold, 38 Silver and 45 Bronze medals – Well done #TeamGB.

Boccia’s Golden Star!

Scarboccia have loaned some Boccia balls to MHA Priceholme, Care Home in Scarborough to enable them to enjoy Boccia during lockdown. The residents are enjoying the game and having fun, some apparently took it very seriously.

Boccia Challenge

Using a heavy sturdy book, place a rolled-up sock, Boccia ball or any object on top of the book. The aim is to knock the object off the book using another Boccia ball or similar household item without knocking the book over. Good Luck!

We are pleased to be collaborating with Scarborough Coastline Sight & Hearing Community in developing a new hub in Eastfield, Scarborough where we will be starting All Inclusive Disability Sport sessions.
